Board #431: Sleek Orange & Gray

por | | 0 comments

Wild pops of orange against a cool gray backdrop and modern minimalism (that is still somewhat whimsical) define today wedding inspiration board, which was largely inspired by a little sneak peek from Amy Atlas' upcoming dessert buffet (truffles arranged on a Missoni-inspired graphic print). For those of you aiming for a modern look, how are you achieving it? What's inspiring you?

Mood: sleek urban chic
Palette: cement gray, orange peel

Title: China Says The End of The Dollar is Near: Alex Jones Tv (Sunday Edition) 1/3

Andrew Brown
Wall Street Journal
January 16, 2011

Hu Highlights Need for U.S.-China Cooperation, Questions Dollar

BEIJING—Chinese President Hu Jintao emphasized the need for cooperation with the U.S. in areas from new energy to space ahead of his visit to Washington this week, but he called the present U.S. dollar-dominated currency system a "product of the past" and highlighted moves to turn the yuan into a global currency.

"We both stand to gain from a sound China-U.S. relationship, and lose from confrontation," Mr. Hu said in written answers to questions from The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.

Mr. Hu acknowledged "some differences and sensitive issues between us," but his tone was generally compromising, and he avoided specific mention of some of the controversial issues that have dogged relations with the U.S. over the past year or so—including U.S. arms sales to Taiwan that led to a freeze in military relations between the world's sole superpower and its rising Asian rival.

Hu calls currency system 'product of the past'

China's President Hu Jintao said Sunday the international currency system was "a product of the past," but it would be a long time before the yuan is accepted as an international currency.
Hu's comments, which came ahead of a state visit to Washington on Wednesday, reflected the continuing tensions over the dollar's role as the major reserve currency in the aftermath of the US financial crisis in 2008.

"The current international currency system is the product of the past," Hu said in written answers to questions posed by The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.

Highlighting the dollar's importance to global trade, Hu implicitly criticized the Federal Reserve's recent decision to pump 600 billion dollars into the US economy, a move criticized as weakening the dollar at the expense of other countries' exports.

Real Wedding Saturday: Sara & Ryan

por | | 0 comments

I've been wanting to share a wedding shot by Carrie Patterson with you all for the longest time, so I'm excited to have that chance today! Sara and Ryan had such a lovely destination wedding in Jackson Hole, with great classic elements, incredible natural beauty, and darling DIY details...

Real Wedding Saturday: Sara & Ryan
Sara wore Monique Lhuillier's Celestine dress.

Real Wedding Saturday: Sara & Ryan
The lovely daisy pomanders were a DIY project for the bride. Sara shares some of the design choices: We based our color-scheme and theme off natural elements like grass, flowers, clouds, trees, leaves and stones and tried to incorporate as many of them into the wedding as we could. Our invitations were engraved in wood, our escort cards were river stones, we made serving trays out of slices of tree trunks, my dress was cloud-like, we had branches, wildflowers and ivy everywhere.

The bridesmaids each wore a different green dress of their choosing.

After the ceremony, Sara traded her veil for a flower by Etsy vendor, Powder Blue Bijoux.

Sara shares one of her favorite parts of the day: I think one of the biggest surprises was the unexpected incorporation of horses into the wedding. We surprised all of our guests with Ryan coming up the hill to the ceremony on Blondie, a beautiful palomino, and the guitarist playing the “Rawhide” song! It was so western and cute. The horses “talked” to each other quite a bit during the ceremony, which was hilarious and kept me from bawling a few times. But it was a complete surprise to everyone (myself included) that all the horses would be released from the barn right after they announced us husband and wife to run through the field behind us as we made our way up the aisle. It was a very classic and romantic moment. Once our guests returned to the patios at the Lazy Moose, there were buckets of carrots there to feed the horses. Everyone really got a kick out of that – maybe we’re all city folk, but the horses stole the show! And, of course, our pictures wouldn’t be complete without one of Ryan and I with Blondie. She was quite the ham!

Real Wedding Saturday: Sara & Ryan
The wedding took place at The Lazy Moose Ranch. Though it was not where the couple originally planned to get married, it was absolutely perfect. Sara tells the story of how they ended up booking Lazy Moose: "Five months before the wedding, due to a change in ownership, our original venue was no longer available and we began the hunt for another available location. Sight unseen we booked the Lazy Moose and could not be happier with our decision. Not only was the ranch even more beautiful and intimate than the original venue, we felt like we gained new friends in owners Robin and Cherrie Siegfried, who take great pride in their gorgeous ranch and took amazing care of us and our day."

Jan Kew at Creative Botanicals (307-739-9092) arranged all of the flowers.

Real Wedding Saturday: Sara & Ryan
Sara designed and printed the menus herself. The meal was a twist on classic Jackson Hole food, including elk egg rolls, smoked gouda quesadillas with barbecue creme fraiche, and bison strip loin with horseradish mashed potatoes. Catering by Bistro Catering.

Real Wedding Saturday: Sara & Ryan
One of the couple's DIY projects was making boutonnieres from flies that Ryan tied himself. Sara tells us, "Since Jackson Hole is a fly-fishing mecca and Ryan is a beyond-obsessed fly-fisherman, we incorporated a lot of fly-fishing details to represent his love of the sport (the cake topper is a bride “catching” a groom on a fly rod, Ryan tied flies as boutonnieres, his cufflinks were tiny fly reels)."

Congratulations Sara and Ryan! What an absolutely beautiful day - it's no wonder your guests are asking you to plan another trip to Jackson Hole next summer! A big thank you to Carrie Patterson for sharing these beautiful photos with us - if you haven't checked out her blog, be sure to spend some time there. It always makes me wish I was in the mountains...

What's Cookin, Good Lookin

por | | 0 comments
What's Cookin, Good LookinMr. SE and I love cooking together. So it's no surprise that I was pumped when Mr. SE gave me a cooking class voucher for our anniversary. Our class was at the Viking School in Franklin (at The Factory). Mr. SE chose Date Night in Paris because I studied abroad there and LOVE the city. The class was made up of 6 couples and one chef. We were put into teams with another couple (4 persons) and each team made the entire meal. It was neat that we were able to do every aspect of the meal, not just one part.
What's Cookin, Good Lookin{where we ate after preparing the meal}

I highly recommend Date Night to any couple, along with their other classes. This would be a great wedding/engagement gift too!What's Cookin, Good Lookin{getting the stock ready for our coq au vin}

Our chef, Dale, had a great personality and made the class a lot of fun. The course was listed as 1 1/2 hours, but we were there for at least 3! Ps- they give you two bottles of wine as a class
What's Cookin, Good Lookin{flambee!! making our crepes suzette}

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren

por | | 0 comments

Since their wedding took place on the first day of summer, Sarah and Oren chose colors inspired by a bold sunset: purples, reds, and some yellow. They really couldn't have chosen more perfect colors either, because despite a gray and rainy day, their wedding was bright and full of cheer. And they've been kind enough to share it with us!

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
The wedding took place at Moraine Farm in Beverly, Massachussetts.

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
I love what Sarah has to say about getting married on a rainy day: June 21st was a stormy, windy day. But, as my dad says, a wet knot is harder to untie! A wedding on the lawn was out of the question, so we all squeezed into the screen porch of the house. There were gusts blowing in sideways and the floor was slippery, but it all made for the most relaxed, intimate ceremony, full of laughter. I truly felt surrounded by love and support.

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
Sarah wore a dress by Dina Bar-El, butterfly flip-flops by Dolce Vita, and a red silk camelia in her hair by Etsy vendor Mikiye. She also wore a necklace given to her by her grandmother, and which was originally a wedding present for Sarah's great grandmother from her mother. Oren wore a suit from Express and a red tie that he already owned. The bridesmaids wore a purple dress of their choice, which looked beautiful next to the groomsmen in their red shirts!

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
Sarah carried a bouquet of dried organic lavender, and the bridesmaids each carried a single sunflower. After the ceremony, guests tossed dried lavender buds at the couple.

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
I absolutely love the story of Sarah's dress: I spotted a photo of Uma Thurman wearing a stunning gown to the Oscars and decided that it would be my wedding dress. I printed out a picture, wrote "Sarah's dress, $299" on it, and stuck it to my wall. After much hunting and Googling, I found out that Dina Bar-El had designed a version of the same dress, and a few weeks later, what was probably the only one for sale in the whole world popped up in an eBay search, in practically my size. I bid $150 and won. Including alterations, I figure I spent just about $299. Moral of the story: It always pays to put it out there in the universe.

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
The day-of coordinator, Linnea Tangorra, brought a giant umbrella which Sarah and Oren used in their portraits.

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
Sarah used Adobe Illustrator to design their save-the-dates, invitations, programs, seating cards and chart, dinner menus, and all of the signs at the wedding. She says it was one of her favorite parts of the process.

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
Sarah made paper cones, which were filled with Terra Chips for the cocktail hour. For drinks, guests enjoyed local beers, Prosecco, and the debut of Sarah's own recently bottled Je Suis Syrah.

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
Sarah is a food writer and winemaker, so good food was a priority. Blue Ribbon Barbecue provided quite a feast, which was served family style so that guests could relax and enjoy a laid-back meal. Aprons were placed in each female guest's chair so they wouldn't have to worry about getting barbecue all over their nice clothes! Ne Me Quitte Pas Catering provided hors d'oeuvres (miniature bison burgers and miniature grilled cheese sandwiches with accompanying shots of soup) and dessert (miniature ice cream cones, ice cream sandwiches, and ice cream pies).

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
Instead of cake guests enjoyed fleur de sel caramels by Recchiuti with glasses of Port. At the reception, Sarah changed into a short dress by Georgiou and red wedges by Paco Gil.

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren
A group from Winiker Bands got everyone dancing!

Real Wedding: Sarah & Oren

Congratulations Sarah and Oren! Best wishes to you as you embark on your life together! And a big thank you to Lisa Rigby for sharing these beautiful and playful photos with us. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the rest of Lisa's awesome work on her blog.
