Brides kiss goodbye to dream weddings

por | | 0 comments

Brides kiss goodbye to dream weddings
NEW YORK - The recession in the United States also hits the wedding industry, as companies go bankrupt, taking down dreams of brides with them. Couples are scaling back on items such as champaigne and chocolate fountains, a sector expert says, while some unlucky couples have to change original wedding plans due to rising bankruptcies in the sector

Connie Banks was planning a "bride’s dream" at Tuscany of Garden Oaks, a Houston banquet hall with ceilings painted to resemble the Sistine Chapel. Then the hall’s owner filed for bankruptcy.

Banks, whose family paid $22,000 for the space and catering, was suddenly left with no place to put the 250 people on her wedding list.

"I still feel guilty my parents lost all that money," said Banks, a 24-year-old teacher who found a new venue at the additional cost of having to change the date to a Friday from a Saturday this June. "I also feel guilty guests will have to take more time off from work to attend a Friday wedding."

The $60 billion-a-year U.S. wedding industry is contracting along with the rest of the economy, said Millie Martini Bratten, editor-in-chief of Conde Nast’s Brides magazine in New York. Couples are scaling back on champagne and chocolate fountains, and business failures by florists and caterers are forcing changes in plans.

Love in the time of economic recession
"People don’t time when they fall in love with the economic cycles," Martini Bratten said. "But when times are tight, we do see a pull-back in spending."

The average cost of tying the knot in the U.S. fell 24 percent last year from 2007, to $21,814, and slipped in the first quarter to $19,196, according to Wedding Report, a research firm.

The number of vows exchanged will probably drop this year because every economic contraction since 1945 has been followed by a decline in weddings, said Shane McMurray, the firm’s chief executive officer. He said there were 100,000 fewer in 2002 than 2001, when the U.S. was in a recession for eight months.

The economy has shed about 5.1 million jobs since December 2007, the most in a post-World War II slump, according to the Labor Department. The U.S. jobless rate is 8.5 percent, the highest since 1983.

Wedding industry unemployment can’t be calculated because photographers, dress makers and others usually don’t limit their work to one kind of event, McMurray said. "Ninety percent of wedding vendors are small businesses, so these folks are obviously struggling."

In Manhattan, couples are downsizing by opting for cocktail parties instead of sit-down dinners, said Amy Aversa, owner of Sweet Basil Catering in New York.

"It’s definitely forcing caterers to get more creative," said Aversa, who estimates her average client is spending 30 percent less this year.

To trim the budget for a September reception, Aversa said she’s using fewer fresh flowers in centerpieces and filling empty spaces with candles and photographs.

She’s also getting more requests for cupcakes rather than multilayered bridal cakes.

For Margarita Lambos in Charlotte, North Carolina, the cost of the shrinking economy was $6,200. Lambos paid cash in advance when she ordered a $4,000 Swarovski crystal-embellished Ines Di Santo gown for her walk down the aisle. Then the recession claimed another victim: the bridal boutique that had her money and her dress.

"Their bankruptcy almost ruined my wedding," said Lambos, a 26-year-old stay-at-home mother. After La Bella Sposa closed in June, Lambos said she contacted the designer’s Toronto studio and, parting with $2,200 more, was married in August in her "dream dress."

The bridal store couldn’t survive a pullback in discretionary spending, said Rick Mitchell, the owners’ bankruptcy lawyer.

Searching for a second-choice wedding location
"People don’t necessarily need an $8,000 wedding gown to get married," Mitchell said.

In Houston, after Tuscany of Garden Oaks closed and owner Titus filed for bankruptcy, Banks reserved her second-choice wedding location, Chateau Polonez. She said she thinks her situation "turned out on the better end" of the spectrum.

Minute Maid Park, home of baseball’s Houston Astros, was the site of weddings for 33 other brides left without reception spaces by Titus, which also owned Bella Terraza, another venue that shut down.

The recession hadn’t begun when Laura McCormick, a stay-at- home mother in Middle Township, New Jersey, posed for pictures with her wedding party in March 2007. McCormick, 28, said she paid Celebrations Studios $4,000 and still doesn’t have a professional photograph of the event.

Company becomes unable to pay photographers
Celebration Studios was low on cash as business started to slow and couldn’t pay photographers who took pictures around the time of the McCormick wedding, said Jeffrey Herrmann, Celebration Studio’s attorney. The company closed in January 2008.

Katharine Atkinson, a 29-year-old grant writer in Portland, Oregon, has mailed save-the-date cards for her August wedding at the Portland Classical Chinese Garden.

Because her father, a home-builder, hasn’t made a sale in eight months and her mother and stepfather lost their jobs, she said, she’s concerned about what she’ll be spending."It feels uncomfortable for me to be in a celebratory wedding mood," she said in an e-mail. "It didn’t take long for the glow of being newly engaged to wear off."

Title: Lochinvar ' - Sir Walter Scott -

rnaudioproductions for http://www.ipodity.com/
http://www.allcast.co.uk/

O young Lochinvar is come out of the west,
Through all the wide Border his steed was the best;
And save his good broadsword he weapons had none,
He rode all unarm'd, and he rode all alone.
So faithful in love, and so dauntless in war,
There never was knight like the young Lochinvar.
He staid not for brake, and he stopp'd not for stone,
He swam the Eske river where ford there was none;
But ere he alighted at Netherby gate,
The bride had consented, the gallant came late:
For a laggard in love, and a dastard in war,
Was to wed the fair Ellen of brave Lochinvar.

So boldly he enter'd the Netherby Hall,
Among bride's-men, and kinsmen, and brothers and all:
Then spoke the bride's father, his hand on his sword,
(For the poor craven bridegroom said never a word,)
"O come ye in peace here, or come ye in war,
Or to dance at our bridal, young Lord Lochinvar?"

"I long woo'd your daughter, my suit you denied; --
Love swells like the Solway, but ebbs like its tide --
And now I am come, with this lost love of mine,
To lead but one measure, drink one cup of wine.
There are maidens in Scotland more lovely by far,
That would gladly be bride to the young Lochinvar."

The bride kiss'd the goblet: the knight took it up,
He quaff'd off the wine, and he threw down the cup.
She look'd down to blush, and she look'd up to sigh,
With a smile on her lips and a tear in her eye.
He took her soft hand, ere her mother could bar, --
"Now tread we a measure!" said young Lochinvar.

So stately his form, and so lovely her face,
That never a hall such a gailiard did grace;
While her mother did fret, and her father did fume
And the bridegroom stood dangling his bonnet and plume;
And the bride-maidens whisper'd, "'twere better by far
To have match'd our fair cousin with young Lochinvar."

One touch to her hand, and one word in her ear,
When they reach'd the hall-door, and the charger stood near;
So light to the croupe the fair lady he swung,
So light to the saddle before her he sprung!
"She is won! we are gone, over bank, bush, and scaur;
They'll have fleet steeds that follow," quoth young Lochinvar.

There was mounting 'mong Graemes of the Netherby clan;
Forsters, Fenwicks, and Musgraves, they rode and they ran:
There was racing and chasing on Cannobie Lee,
But the lost bride of Netherby ne'er did they see.
So daring in love, and so dauntless in war,
Have ye e'er heard of gallant like young Lochinvar?

Save the Date!

por | | 0 comments

Save the Date!I've finally had a request for a photo save the date design! I was thrilled to create a design for Rachel and Eric whose wedding colors are navy and fuscia. They gave me three different photos, all of which were beautiful and I created a couple options for them to choose from. Here is the one they've selected. I need to find out who their photographer is so that I can credit him (or her) for the beautiful photos. The couple will be attaching these to magnets to send to their guests.

Board #411: Raspberry & Indigo

por | | 0 comments

Happy Monday! I thought that this week I would play around a bit with the look of my inspiration boards, pulling from non-wedding sources for inspiration, and to creating boards that focused on a few really strong images. Hopefully today's inspiration board does that. I absolutely love the palette here, as well as the textures, and I tried to choose images that were somewhat playful - that don't take themselves too seriously. What do you think? Does an inspiration board like this still help you to get a sense of an event or a look?

Mood: playfully preppy, feminine whimsy
Palette: vanilla, raspberry, indigo

Finding the Right Venue
Finding the Right Venue
It is so hard to find the right venue for your ceremony and reception. But it is one of the most critical factors to the success of your wedding. It sets the tone for your event. Two web sites offer you a little help with narrowing down your choice. Enter Unique Venues (www.uniquevenues.com) and Beverly Clark's Wedding Locations (www.weddinglocation.com). Both sites allow you to search by state, have great pictures, and a wealth of information about each site. If you are just starting your search, I would suggest that you start there.

Two LONG Months!!

por | | 0 comments

My wedding will be April 18th of this year so it is officially two months away (59 days to be exact)!! I just spent some time looking at my videographer's new blog and I watched some videos of a bride getting ready and now I'm getting butterflies in my stomach!! The name of the company is Sweet Pea Studio. The owner, Daniel, is a great person to work with. He is very prompt and easy to get in touch with so check him out if you are in the NY NJ area.

I am so excited and I can't wait for my wedding. I am attending my first fitting next Saturday and I am anxiously waiting for my surprise bridal shower which could be any weekend now. It is so exciting to have all of these events to celebrate a marriage and I am truly happy to share these moments with you guys!

I sent my invitations out this past weekend and I completed my table numbers. I will post some photos for everyone. I am currently working on menus for the tables at the reception and crossword puzzles for my out of town baskets to test our closest family and friends to see how well they know us.

I am also working on invitations for many couples who are also getting married soon as well as monograms, reception details and other things so I have been keeping very busy.

My new website is going to be up soon (keeping my fingers crossed). It's up now but now totally set up so no peeking!!

i waited eight long months
she finally set him free
i told him i can't lie he was the only one for me
two weeks and we had caught on fire
she's got it out for me
but i wear the biggest smile ;-)

whoa... i never meant to brag
but i got him where i want him now
whoa... it was never my intention to brag
to steal it all away from you now
but god does it feel so good

and if you could then you know you would
cause god it just feels so
it just feels so good.

And then a woman appears out of nowhere and gets her book signed with no effort! Oh, the humanity!

This was from the quarter final session between Mark Selby and Mark Allen.

Dear Diary...

por | | 0 comments

I started this blog with the intent to keep a record of things that I found interesting, beautiful, or just plain fun. But then something else struck me- will I be able to carry this on longer than my diaries and journals of the past? I was always so excited about starting them, then two or three days went by and I just lost my thunder.

Last week I was having a conversation with a friend of mine, who happens to be getting married in June, about this very same topic. She told a funny story about how she stumbled upon her old diaries during a recent trip home. Some of the journals were pretty sparse and had entries like the following, "Dear diary...I'm sorry I haven't written in so long", which leads me to ask the question "Why do we feel like there's a relationship between us and the inanimate book?" Did that sound like Carrie Bradshaw? Because I totally meant it to...

Dear Diary...

Hopefully this blog won't be peppered with "I'm sorry I haven't written in so long...". I'll try to keep it up, not so much for the entertainment of my audience, which I'm sure is SO huge, but for myself. Happy reading.

Rachel & EricI worked with Rachel on her save the date and monogram designs back in January. She was great to work with so I was thrilled when she contacted me about designing her wedding invitations for her. I designed her entire invitation suite including the wraparound labels. I also did the printing. I sent the invitations off to Rachel and she finished up by adding rhinestones, placing the invitations in the boxes and wrapping them with ribbon. She just sent me photos of the finished invitation suite and it just turned out gorgeous. Thanks Rachel!

Title: Rachel, Simone Bitton

On March 16, 2003, in the almost uninterrupted tide of Middle Easten current affairs and just before the war in Iraq, a small tragic event was reported by some press agencies, just a few lines in the newspaper, or a 45 -second report on television: A young American peace activist was killed in the Gaza Strip, crushed by an Israeli bulldozer while she was trying to prevent the destruction of a Palestinian house.
A few weeks later, some media reports mentioned that the Israeli military police conducted an inquiry, concluding that Rachel Corrie's death was accidental. Despite many eyewitnesses claims that she was intentionally murdered by the bulldozer driver, the American administration never asked for an independent inquiry, and the case was classified and forgotten.
Five years later, director Simone Bitton is somehow doing what a court should have done. RACHEL is a deep cinema investigation into the death of a young unknown girl, made with a rigour and scope normally reserved for first-rate historical characters. It gives word to all the people involved in Rachel's story, from Palestinian and international witnesses to Israeli military spokespersons and investigators, doctors, activists and soldiers linked to the affair. The film begins like a classical documentary, but very soon it develops and transcends its subject, transforming into a cinematographic meditation on youth, war, idealism and political utopia. Palestine, the reality of which is filmed close-up, becomes a metaphor - a tomb for a child of today.
In the beginning, there is this: She was called Rachel Corrie. She was 22. She was convinced that her American nationality would be enough to make her an effective human shield, that her simple presence would save lives, olive trees, wells and houses. Like many youngsters of her generation, she kept a travel log in the form of e-mails, which she sent to her family and friends in the United States.
During the eight weeks that she had left to live, Rachel Corrie was to discover that which, in her own words, no documentary film could have taught her.
